Indigenous leadership brings legitimacy to the GCC process. The wisdom traditions and “other way of knowing” of indigenous communities can help to inspire GCC delegate consensus and cooperation, while reducing the risks of cooptation and reactionary populism. Indigenous participation in the GCC also helps to make global commons governance into a practical exercise, especially given that indigenous territories are critical environments for the maintenance of global biodiversity.
